Technical guide for Hovixa users on performing granular restores of specific files, directories, and MySQL databases using the JetBackup 5 cPanel interface.

Restoring Files and Databases using JetBackup 5

JetBackup 5 allows for granular recovery, meaning you can restore individual files or specific databases without overwriting your entire account. This is the preferred method for recovering from accidental deletions or failed application updates. All restores are pulled from Hovixa's secure off-site storage.

1. Restoring Specific Files or Folders

Use this method if you have accidentally deleted a file or if a specific directory (like wp-content) has been compromised.

  1. Log in to cpanel.hovixa.com and open JetBackup 5.
  2. Click on Home Directory under the Restore & Download section.
  3. Select the backup date (snapshot) you wish to restore from.
  4. Click Change File Selection. This opens a file browser of your backup.
  5. Navigate to the specific files or folders, check the boxes next to them, and click Select Files.
  6. Click the Restore button.
  7. Review the "Restore Summary" and click Restore Selected Items.

2. Restoring MySQL/MariaDB Databases

Restoring a database will drop the current tables and replace them with the data from the backup. Ensure you have no unsaved production data before proceeding.

  1. On the JetBackup 5 dashboard, click Database.
  2. Locate the database you need to recover.
  3. Select the desired backup date from the list associated with that database.
  4. Click Restore.
  5. In the confirmation screen, you can choose to "Remove orphaned tables" (recommended for a clean state).
  6. Click Restore Selected Items.

3. Monitoring Restore Progress

Restores are processed as background tasks. You can continue working in cPanel while the process completes.

  • Click the Queue icon in the JetBackup sidebar.
  • Status: Pending/Processing – The server is fetching data from remote storage.
  • Status: Completed – The data has been successfully written back to your account.
  • Status: Failed – Usually occurs if your account is over its disk quota. Clear space and retry.

Important Implementation Notes

  • Existing Files: By default, JetBackup will overwrite existing files with the versions from the backup.
  • Database Users: Restoring a database only restores the data and tables. It does not restore database users or their permissions. If you deleted the user, you must recreate them via the MySQL Database Wizard.
  • Email Restores: To restore emails, use the Email Accounts icon within JetBackup 5. This allows you to restore specific mailboxes without affecting your web files.

Warning: A restore cannot be undone. Always ensure you are selecting the correct date and the correct database before initiating the process.
